Effective Nuclear Charge

The effective nuclear charge of an electron in a non-hydrogenic atom is the number of elementary charges that the electron experiences by the nucleus. It is usually denoted as , and is called this because core electrons closer to the nucleus and will effectively shield some of it's positive charge.

As electrons are removed from an element in ions the shielding effect becomes lesser because there are less electrons to shield and thus the effective nuclear charge decreases.
